Striker Alvaro Rivero Re-Signs With York9 FC

Toronto, ON (October 16, 2020) – York9 FC are delighted to announce that striker Alvaro Rivero has re-signed with the club for 2021, with options for the 2022 and 2023 seasons plus further long-term performance incentives.

The Spaniard, a product of the Real Madrid youth academy, joined in advance of the Island Games but, owing to quarantine procedure, didn’t meet his new team-mates until touching down in Charlottetown. Even still, his contribution to the 2020 season proved invaluable.

Rivero featured in all seven of York9’s fixtures, despite the minimal preparation. Memorably, he contributed a superb individual moment in the side’s second game against Pacific FC. Sprung from the bench early in the second half, he latched onto a Ryan Telfer flick-on with twenty minutes to go. Taking a first touch with his right foot, he spectacularly and instinctively thumped a brilliant finish to the top corner with his left.

Confirmation of the 23-year-old’s new deal comes shortly after the club announced the signing of German attacker Julian Ulbricht as Managing Consultant Angus McNab puts the various jigsaw puzzle pieces together ahead of the 2021 campaign.

“I’m very happy that we managed to get this deal with Alvaro agreed and signed,” McNab says.

“He came into the squad late and with the quarantine period he had to follow before arriving in Prince Edward Island, he hadn’t actually met any of his teammates until the first day there! He wasn’t given the opportunity to build connections on the training field that he would in a normal year.”

“We saw enough in Alvaro that excited us to bring him back. His finish against Pacific was exceptional and we need to manufacture a lot more opportunities for him and all of our forwards next year. Our creation of opportunities in open play was certainly the most disappointing aspect in 2020 and we’ll work hard this off season to look at how we train and who we bring in help that.”
