York9 FC Signs Spanish Striker Álvaro Rivero

Toronto, ON (July 27, 2020) York9 FC has further strengthened their attack with the addition of Spanish forward Álvaro Rivero.

The 23-year-old arrives from Tercera División side Club Deportivo Leganés B, who he joined earlier this year from Getafe CF.

A product of Real Madrid’s academy, he represented Los Blancos from Under-9s through to Under-19s – playing alongside the likes of Achraf Hakimi who has just signed for Inter Milan after two seasons on loan at Borussia Dortmund, and Luca Zidane, son of Zinedine – before leaving to join Rayo Vallecano in 2016.

Instead of extending his stay in Spain, Rivero has chosen to head to Canada and will join up with his new teammates in 14 days, following the mandatory self-quarantine period, having landed last weekend and having his work permit approved.

Managing consultant Angus McNab added: “We had discussions with Álvaro back in January, but he decided to see out the current season in Spain.

“I knew it was just a short-term agreement that he had signed, so he never really came off our board. When Adrián [Ugarriza] was released, we picked up the conversation and the opportunity is a good fit for everyone.

“It has come together quite quickly, and we now have another versatile forward who adds to the depth of the squad.”
